Welcome to the Project Wikispace for Jerry Crisci

I am interested in two research areas:

1. What is the process that students at all levels use to take notes for research projects? How can technology assist in this process (Kidspiration, Inspiration, Google Notebook, etc.)?

I will not have the opportunity to pursue the second question this year, but I am planning to observe students' notetaking strategies. Specifically, I am interested in seeing how students screen information, summarize information, and translate text into their own words.

2. How can interactive online technology be used to help scaffold lessons about the New Literacies? Can some of these technologies be used alone to help students understand selected topics (for example, Web site evaluation)?

To help answer this question, I created a Flash prototype to see if these skills could be taught. The prototype is available here.

I am also interested in seeing if Avatars can be used to help guide online instruction in the New Literacies for young children. Many Scarsdale children participate in online communities like Club Penguin. In addition, online characters have increasingly been used in software that is marketed to young children. I am interested in knowing if the characters have a positive effect on the response of the learner.

I will complete the design of this tutorial and test it with students in the spring.===
